Volunteer Opportunities in Indigenous Communities
Youth Challenge Australia has a number of volunteer positions available in the upcoming months and is currently recruiting for these positions. This is a great opportunity for young Australians to develop their understanding of the Indigenous Australian culture.
YCA will be placing volunteers in Papunya, Minjilang, Maningrida, Warruwi, Gunbalanya, Jabiru and Yuendumu.
Volunteers in Papunya will be working with the Central Australian Youth Link Up Service(CAYLUS) at an internet cafe to help local Indigenous people with the computers and internet access.
Volunteers working in Minjilang, Maningrida, Warruwi, Gunbalanya and Jabiru will be implementing and facilitating sport and recreation programs for children over the winter school holidays. The programs will have a focus on nutrition and healthy eating.
Volunteers in Yuendumu will work with the Mt Theo Youth Program on a sport and recreation holiday program and be in community for the much anticipated Yuendumu Sports Weekend which is the first weekend in August.
For volunteers wanting to experience two different communities and a longer placement the Papunya and West Arnhem Land programs can be combined, see above for dates. A discount to the contribution fee with be provided.
Program Dates:
· Papunya: departure April or May for a period of 1 month;
· West Arnhem Land: 14th June to 19th July 2010;
· Papunya/West Arnhem land: 17th May to 19th July 2010; and
· Yuendumu: 29 May 2010 - 7 August 2010.
All meals, accommodation, insurance, training and transport (once arrived at closest regional/capital city) are included. Volunteers must pay for flights to closest capital/regional city and contribute $1800-$2000 towards expenses.
