"Although this experience was at times very challenging and tiring, it was also great fun and fulfilling. This was due in part to the great spirit of the kids and humour of the older generations who allowed us into their country and lives... Being involved in the Youth Challenge program allowed me to meet many wonderful people and I highly recommend it."  - D'Arcy Molan, Alice Springs

INDIGENOUS YOUTH

In remote Indigenous communities there are limited resources and opportunities available for youth to be engaged in a meaningful way. Implementing youth programs has proven to be a successful way of supporting young people to improve their social and educational skills, leading to employment opportunities and further education.

By providing opportunities to develop leadership skills, and participate in sport and recreation activities, youth are less likely to become involved in destructive behaviour such as petrol sniffing, drinking, self-harm, drugs, and smoking, all of which have long term health and social complications.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Work with one of Australia's leading Indigenous youth organisations
PROGRAM 1 FAST FACTS:
Location: Yuendumu, Central Australia

PROGRAM 1 OVERVIEW:

In Yuendumu, Youth Challenge Australia supports the successful youth program, Jaru Pirrjirdi (Strong Voices), which is run by Mt Theo.

Jaru Pirrjirdi offers a number of programs for young people including leadership development, skills training, careers development, education, and sport and recreation. All of the Mt Theo programs are run with the support of the Elders of the community, who developed and initiated the program. The aim of Mt Theo's work is to keep youth engaged, interested and challenged by activities outside of school hours. Volunteers work with the Mt Theo youth workers to run daily activities for children, including sport and recreation, cultural camps, and swimming.
