A multitude of social development challenges still face Guyana: lack of access to education, a lack of youth opportunities, ensuring the health and safety of mining workers, and the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in communities. Guyana is one of the few Caribbean countries whose HIV/AIDS epidemic has spread beyond specific high-risk groups in the general population. In 2006, the national HIV prevalence rate in Guyana among adults ages 15 to 49 was estimated at 2.4%. The three main issues facing the Guyanese community are the increasing spread of HIV/AIDS, unemployment and lack of access to education, health, water and sanitation, as well as basic infrastructure. By getting involved you will be able to learn more and experience the lives of Guyanese people and communities first hand, contribute to improving the standard of living in Guyana and assisting in objectives which will improve health and increase education in some of the poorest areas and help support the development of Guyanese children, youth and communities. | | | | COUNTRY PROFILE | | Location: | Northern South America, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean, between Suriname and Venezuela.
