YCA is working towards the seventh Millennium Development Goal of environmental sustainability in Costa Rica.

“YCA was my window and gateway into an unknown but remarkable world. Never before had I felt that my actions truly made a difference in the lives of others or that an experience could connect me with a community for life. A small group of committed individuals really can make an incredible difference and they are my inspiration today to continue positively changing the lives of others.” - Narelle Couper, Costa Rica

PROGRAM FAST FACTS:

Location:

Costa Rica, Central America

Duration:

8 - 10 weeks

Dates (approx):

June - August; December - February

Project areas:

Conservation, Health, Education, Gender Equality

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
YCA has been involved with over 150 community-identified development projects in Costa Rica, providing the opportunity for remote community development since 1992. YCA works in collaboration with Reto Juvenil International (RJI) to identify and support numerous communities that require assistance in Costa Rica and to work with them towards a sustainable future.

DEPARTING JUNE 2013:

Dates: 25 June 2013 – 30 July 2013

Development Focus: Environmental Conservation

Activities:In 2013, YCA volunteers will continue to support a turtle conservation program. This project will involve day and night work.  During the day volunteers will be involved in activities including cleaning the beach of debris, excavating nests in the hatchery, maintenance of the hatchery and possibly activities with children from the nearest communities. During the night volunteers will be involved in activities including night patrols along the beach looking for turtle nests, egg collection, reburying eggs in the hatchery and
collecting data on the turtles encountered. Volunteering in this beautiful, biodiversity rich nation helps to enhance the capacity of community members to engage in sustainable development and sustainable tourism.

THE VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE:
Each project in Costa Rica is different, and has its own goals and activities. Typically, volunteers on the Costa Rica program work on one key project which is usually focused on environmental conservation and education. In addition they work on a number of smaller activities such as youth work, gender equality and health. To get an idea of what 8 – 10 weeks in Costa Rica might look like, have a look at two recent projects.
