Empowering Indigenous Australian youth through leadership and development

Youth Challenge Australia is working towards the eighth Millennium Development Goal of creating a Global Partnership for Development in Vanuatu.
“Our group’s success was beyond my wildest expectations… I think the biggest success of the group was not the work they did in manual labour, but the way each person found the strength to be themselves, be strong role models and lead by example by behaving [in] a very mature and responsible way with honour, kindness and laughter. At the end of this project we had eight motivated, focused and inspired young leaders. Each one is clearer on who they are, what they want to strive for and what type of leader they want to be.” – Bev Seiver, IYLP, Vanuatu

Applications for the Indigenous Youth Leadership Program in June 2012 are now closed.

The Indigenous Youth Leadership Program (IYLP) with YCA is a program which sends young Indigenous Australians on a leadership and community development project in Vanuatu, in the South Pacific.

PROGRAM FAST FACTS:

Location: Vanuatu, South Pacific
Duration: 7 weeks (including training in Australia)
Dates (approx):

June - August

Project areas: Partnerships for Development, Indigenous Youth Leadership, Youth Development, Community Development

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

The IYLP is a unique and exciting opportunity for young Indigenous Australians (21 – 30 years) to enhance their leadership and vocational skills through personal development, community development, work experience, education and by building cross cultural awareness and understanding.
Teams of 5 Indigenous Australian youth participants, along with an Indigenous Australian Field Staff, receive training in Australia before travelling to Vanuatu to live in a developing community for 6 weeks.

The IYLP teams have the opportunity to work, share experiences and develop relationships with other young Indigenous Australian and local Ni-Vanuatu youth, as well as various Indigenous communities in Vanuatu.

Funded by the federal government's Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA), this program provides young Indigenous Australians with the opportunity to gain valuable leadership and community development experience.
This is a volunteer role, however the participation fee and all project related travel costs for IYLP volunteers and field staff are funded by FaHCSIA. Reasonable equipment, medical and other project costs are also covered.

THE VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE:

Through involvement with the IYLP, Indigenous Australian youth build practical skills in leadership, communication, negotiation, mediation, teamwork, project management, planning, reporting, cross cultural understanding, financial management and results management. The YCA IYLP provides benefits to young Indigenous Australians, the Ni-Vanuatu communities where they work, as well as the broader communities of Australia and Vanuatu.
To get an idea of what 7 weeks participating in YCA’s IYLP might look like, have a look at some past intakes.
If you feel that you are open minded, enthusiastic, passionate about youth, work well in a team, and you want to experience working on an international community development project, please consider applying to participate as a volunteer or Field Staff on the next IYLP in Vanuatu.
